How did you go about getting your first break in the career of being a make-up artist? :) (Oh my gosh, I hope that made sense D: )
Honesty, I work my ass off. That’s the honest truth. I worked and I was (and still am) on a mission to constantly improve my skill. I started working with photography students. I offered my services and just asked for a minimal kit fee of $35. I never did TFP (Trade For Print) and to this day I still don’t. On rare occasions I will if I know that it can benefit me and my career. Sometimes even if you don’t get paid, it can still benefit your port. If there is a really amazing photographer that I have been wanting to work with, I will do TFP. When it’s something that I always do (like a student shoot, fashion shoot, magazine work, television, or movie work.) I charge. Even if I am doin trade and am goin out of town I still ask for gas. If I’m going out of my way and spending money to get there then it’s only fair. Models don’t spend money when they model (other than gas), photographers, even though they spent money on their equipment, don’t spend nearly as much money as a MUAH(Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist). I am constantly putting money into my kit to replenish my product. When I was 18 I started working for MAC. I worked there for several years. It was a growing experience and definitely a great stepping stone for my career. It allowed me to grow as an artist and definitely gave me more hands on experience. I was still doing photoshoots while I was working there. I never stopped working on my portfolio. As a MUAH your skills are ever changing and so should your portfolio. If you are constantly doing shoots then your improvement will show in the photos. After I worked at MAC I kept working in the industry as a freelance artist. Recently I have been working with an amazing company called Rockeresque. They are a COMPLETELY Vegan and Creulty Free. With Rockeresque I have been given some amazing opportunities. I did LA fashion week, I’m constantly doing shoots for the company, and recently I was made their plus size model. Advice that I would give someone other than the previous response that I gave to a girl, it’s a bit back in my feed, is to always work hard. Never give up. Don’t be afraid of the word “NO”. Take a chance. The way that I see it is if someone tells me no then I’m exactly where I began. No harm no foul and at least you know the answer and tried. I get a lot of girls telling me that they are scared. Don’t be. You have nothing to lose by asking someone to work with them. You only have everything to gain. It allows you to build your portfolio, master you craft, and get some hands on real world experience. If you are interested in doing this as a living, work your ass off. The way I saw it is I’m fighting for the career that I have always wanted. The life that I can give myself. You are essentially working for your future. Be strong. In this industry you can get a lot of critism. Dot let it effect you. Don’t take things personally. It took me a good amount of time to be open to critism. But now I use it as a tool to help me better myself as an artist. If someone say, “I don’t like the way she applies eyeshadow.” They aren’t attacking you as a person. They have an opinion on something. That’s normal. Sometimes people will take personal attacks on someone. But just realize that it’s coming from a very negative mind space. People say mean things usually for 1 of 3 reasons. 1- They are jealous. 2- They are in satisfied with themselves and they feel the need to put down others. Or 3- they are just assholes and that would fall under number 2. If you are doing make up, find a mentor, or just someone that you look up to. See how thu do their make up and try that. You will always make it your own. Everytime I do looks I post them here and my FB. They are also on the Rockeresque tumblr and Facebook. Feel free to check it out and perhaps try some looks. Www.facebook.com/alexmorrismuaWww.facebook.com/Rockeresque Rockeresque.tumblr.com When I do step by step photo tutorials I list what products i used and where I placed them. And of course, of you have any questions, want feed back, or just wanna chat about my job, I’m always here and you can ask. I hope that helped you and anyone else who has thy question. XOXO
I loved your thigh tattoo as showed in the ChubbyBunnies pic. I REALLY love the Tie Bombshell image on your tumblr. I guess my question is ESB or RotJ?
Depends on my mood. As a kid my favorite was Return of the Jedi. It feels like it has closure where as Empire left things hanging. As I have grown older Empire has had a special place in my heart. It gives depth to so many characters, back story, understanding, an growth. I love all of the ORIGINAL triligy. The newer three are crap. I feel bad that children now are experiencing a completely different world of starwars. Those movies, as cheesy as it sounds, have gotten me thru some of the hardest times in my life.
heyy (: i was wondering how you got into make up art and hairstying? and how do you find it? as im considering doing a course in it(:xx
Being a MUAH is something that I have been working on for years. It started when I was 8, to be honest. When I was in high school I started working with photographers. I had a small kit with the basics. I slowly built my collection with the money that I made from my shoots. I have been doing make-up and hair for about 9, going on 10, years now.
I have always strived to provide for my clients and have rarely if ever shot down a job. If I can’t work the job its because of 1 of 3 reasons. 1: I’m already booked, 2: Family schedules, or 3: The job is TFP and its not something that will benefit my port. (At this point in my career I won’t work for TFP unless its with someone that I want to work with). Putting my family first is one thing that I have always made sure of. There was a period of time where my work took over my life and I ignored my family, friends, and even my own health. My family will always come first when need be. My career is my life and I have strived for years to find a balance.
I worked my ass of and I still do. Some times this can mean working 16+ hour days. I never gave up when I was told “No”. I kept pushing on. My best advice that I can give to someone is to never give up. The industry is full of assholes, cheats, and liars. Don’t let that discourage you from being honest, fair, and kind. But don’t let others mistake your kindness for weakness. I’m not saying that everyone falls under the category of liars, cheats, and assholes. But there sure as hell are a lot. When you find good working relationships, don’t be an asshole.
NEVER EVER EVER CANCEL LAST MINUTE OR JUST DON’T SHOW UP!!! This is the biggest dick move that anyone, and I mean ANYONE can make. Models and MUAHs are notorious for just never showing up. Don’t be that asshole. I have NEVER EVER DONE THIS. I will NEVER do this either. If I am not there and I didn’t call or I am not answering my phone (which has never happened) there is a damn good reason. Meaning I was in a car wreck or something else horrible where I am physically unable to be there or answer my phone. Once I had an allergic reaction and was rushed to the ER and I STILL CALLED! I was going into anaphylaxis and I sounded funny, BUT I STILL CALLED!
Remember why you want to do this. Don’t let your passion dim. There are times that you will need to remind your self why you started this path in life. Be your own motivation. Things can be hard, people can be cruel, and days will be long. Just don’t give up. Take things with a grain of salt. And don’t take professional criticism personally, just fix what you need to work on. Never stop learning. The day that you say “I have learned all I need to know and thats it”. Is the day you need to quit your job.
I know that this was long, but I hope it helped! If there are any other questions that you have, let me know!
